How do you find respite care that you can actually trust?

I've been caring for my mother at home and haven't had a real break in months. My siblings help when they can, but everyone has jobs and families of their own, so most of the day-to-day responsibility falls on me. I know respite care exists, but I'm nervous about leaving Mom with someone she doesn't know and I'm not sure where to start looking for reputable services. How have other families found trustworthy respite care, and what questions should I ask before bringing someone into the home?

Adult Day Care Programs - Worth It?

We're considering adult day care for my mom 2-3 days a week to give me time to work and run errands. Has anyone used these programs? What should we look for in a good facility? The cost is significant but I think it might help both of us. Would love to hear your experiences.

Adult day care is a fabulous option. Once my mom moved in with my husband and me, she was not ready or willing to stay home with him. The daycare facility in DSM was a great option. The minimum age in the unit was 45. The only drawback was, as with many adult daycares, the mix of cognitive issues that can range from dementia to ??. Some of the criteria I looked for were a range of ages of the support staff, daylight into the facility, field trips, good food, activities, security in and out of the facility... and most of all, did mom seem happy and miss when she couldn't go. Where we are now, the minimum age is 18, with a whole host of cognitive challenges present. Mom did not feel comfortable, and it made her anxious. My husband is providing daycare, and we have respite.... respite is key for the caregiver and patient... my respite relief is 19 years old and a freshman in college... they are perfect together!

Yes, adult daycare is a fabulous option. The CADES program at Concord United Methodist Church in Farragut does a wonderful job focusing on the abilities of each individual. My sis-in-law is only 70, but has Moderate Alzheimer's already. We are just beginning to nudge her in this direction.
