What technology actually helps keep a loved one safe at home?

My father still lives at home, but his dementia is progressing and we're becoming increasingly concerned about him wandering or forgetting to lock the doors. My siblings and I don't live close enough to check on him throughout the day, so we're looking at things like door sensors, medication reminders, cameras, and GPS devices. There are a few things that have made a big difference for our family, but we found that keeping it simple worked better than putting a bunch of technology around Mom. We started with door sensors that alert us if she leaves the house unexpectedly, and a GPS device became especially helpful once wandering became more of a concern. We also use medication reminders, but we have learned that reminders only work if someone can follow up when a dose is missed. Cameras can be helpful for checking in remotely, but we try to use them thoughtfully and respect our loved one's privacy. I would start with the specific safety concern you are trying to solve, rather than buying everything at once, and talk with his doctor or care team if the wandering is becoming more frequent or difficult to manage.

My father with dementia has started wandering. We're looking into GPS tracking devices and wondering what others have used successfully. Also interested in apps that might help with daily reminders and medication management. Technology feels overwhelming but I know it could really help us.
